First Time Voters
If you are a first-time voter, you are required to provide your Social Security number and another acceptable item of identification when you register.
Requirements
If you are a first-time voter, you are required to provide your Social Security number AND one of the following acceptable items of identification when you register:
- A valid Georgia driver’s license
- A valid ID card issued by a branch, department, agency, or any other entity of Georgia, any other state, or the U.S. authorized by law to issue personal ID
- A valid U.S. passport
- A government employee photo ID
- A valid student ID card containing your photograph from any public or private college, university, or postgraduate technical or professional school located within Georgia
- A valid U.S. military ID card with photo
- Valid Tribal ID with photo
- A certified copy of your birth certificate
- A valid Social Security card
- A certified naturalization document
- A certified copy of court records showing adoption, name, or sex change
- A current utility bill, or a legible copy thereof, showing your name and address
- A current bank statement, or a legible copy thereof, showing your name and address
- A current government check or paycheck, or a legible copy thereof, showing your name and address

What is a Poll Watcher
A poll watcher is a person designated by an independent candidate, nonpartisan candidate, a political party, or political body to observe at a polling place on election day or during advance voting. Poll Watchers may be permitted behind the enclosed space for the purpose of observing the conduct of the election and the counting and recording of votes. Candidates listed on the ballot are ineligible to serve as a poll watcher in such primary, election, or runoff.
No person shall be appointed or be eligible to serve as a poll watcher in any primary or election in which such person is a candidate. Poll watcher training must be provided by the political party, political body, or candidate designating the poll watcher.
Prohibited Activities of Poll Watchers
- Talking to voters
- Checking electors lists
- Using photographic or other electronic monitoring or recording devices
- Using cellular telephones
- Wearing anything advertising a candidacy or advocating for or against an issue.
- Electioneering or any kind of campaigning in the polling place or within 150 feet of the entrance of the polling place during voting hours. O.C.G.A. § 21-2-414(a)
How to Become a Poll Watcher
Contact either the Laurens County Democratic or Republican Party.
Proper Identification
Except as noted below, ALL voters are required to present proper identification to a poll worker at or prior to completion of a voter’s certificate.
Proper identification shall consist of any one of the following:
- A Georgia driver’s license which was properly issued by the appropriate state agency;
- A valid Georgia voter identification card 1 or other valid identification card issued by a branch, department, agency, or entity of the State of Georgia, any other state, or the United States authorized by law to issue personal identification, provided that such identification card contains a photograph of the voter;
- A valid United States passport;
- A valid employee identification card containing a photograph of the voter and issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States government, this state or any county, municipality, board, authority, or other entity of this state;
- A valid United States military identification card, provided that such identification card contains a photograph of the voter; or
- A valid tribal identification card containing a photograph of the voter.
If the voter does not have any of these forms of identification, he or she may vote a provisional ballot upon swearing or affirming that he or she is the person identified in the voter certificate.
Exception
A voter who registered to vote by mail, but did not furnish the required identification at that time and is voting for the first time in this state is required to present either a form of identification listed or a document that shows the name and address of the voter. These include copies of a current:
- Bank statement
- Government check
- Paycheck
- Utility bill
- Other government documents

Requirements: be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Laurens County, be at least 16 years of age, be able to attend the scheduled training days, and have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.

Where to Check the Status of an Absentee Ballot
The Georgia Secretary of State's Office maintains a database, by county, of all Absentee Ballots mailed and received along with their status.
To make your voting experience successful, visit My Voter Page and follow the Voter Checklist.
- Confirm the status of your registration at least four weeks prior to the date of the election by visiting My Voter Page.
- Update your registration information, such as name and address by the registration deadline.
- Know the voter identification requirements before you attempt to vote.
- Know your Election Day Polling location and how to get there.
- Learn who can assist in voting and who can receive assistance.
- Learn the date and times the Election Day polls will be open.
- Obtain a Sample Ballot from the My Voter Page website to become acquainted with the candidates and other information on the ballot.
How Old Do You Need to be to Register and to Vote?
- To Register: 17.5 years old
- To Vote: 18 years old

Requirements
In order to qualify to register vote in Laurens County, you must be:
- 17 and a half years old to register, 18 years old to vote
- Able to provide proof of residence in the County
- Must possess a photo ID
- Not currently serving a sentence or on probation for a felony conviction
- A United States citizen
